Book Overview

On February 19, 2018, Scott, my sweet husband of 26 years, died. He was 51 years old, and we did not see it coming. He contracted the flu, which lowered his immune system and eventually led to the discovery of MRSA/staph in his body. A piece of staph attached to his heart valve, broke off and spread to his brain causing a massive stroke. He came home from a high school basketball game with the flu on February 6, and 13 days later, he was gone. There is no way we could have predicted the series of events those two weeks would hold.

One week after his death, I posted on social media for people to know what happened and to respond to the hundreds of messages, calls and texts I had received. I began posting every Saturday morning to keep everyone updated on my three boys, (Nate, Cooper and Brodie), my circumstances and my heart. I have been raw and vulnerable before my community of friends and family, and they have encouraged me to publish my journey.

Reviews

Cliches are abundant when dealing with tragic events. Variations of “make the best of what you have” or “when life gives you lemons…” etc. but real life is so much more complicated than that. It was truly inspiring to follow Penny through this year of heartbreak and growth. Nothing about her journey was simple and her weekly essays reflected that. She has a gift for narrative that almost puts you in her shoes for long enough to feel some of her grief and melancholy. And because of this connection her wise and prayerful approach to pulling herself through resonate powerfully toward the end of each essay. A smart and inspiring work from a truly gifted author.

I’ve been inspired by Penny’s post every Saturday morning. Her kind and inspirational husband Scott, taught history at my daughter’s high school in Knoxville, TN. Unfortunately, he passed away from a tragic infection. If was very traumatic for our school community and the area as a whole. Penny’s words and journey has been healing for her and for those of us who love her and her family. You will be blessed.

Told from the heart!

Raw, honest, heartfelt…while no one ever imagines a journey of grief, Penny has used her journey to reach others and share her testimony and Scott’s too.  So much of her story can be applied to so many areas of our lives.

An uplifting reminder about God’s promise to deliver us from grief and sorrow

My pastor, Scott Sparks, encouraged everyone to share their story, particularly in times when you felt broken.  He knew that in those trials, we were able to lean on others and grow closer to God.  After Scott’s untimely death, his wonderful wife Penny, shares her story and the emotions she felt as she and her boys learned to live without Scott.  You will feel the presence of God and His promises as you read Penny’s story.
